African beerpot - Blown glass

The use of the Beerpot is an integral part of Zulu culture since ritual beer drinking takes place in every aspect of their customary life. It is the essence of hospitality and communality. Held with both hands in a cupped fashion, it is passed on from person to person.

The many patterns and decorations on these Beerpots are much like the designs that the Zulu warriors used when decorating their bodies with scars.

Taking inspiration from these traditional shapes and patterns I produce one-off, blown glass Beerpots. The scars and carvings I introduce to the surfaces and the earthy, coarse colours are undeniably an echo of my African heritage.
